Top 5 baby items I didn’t know I needed
When I had Jackson, I never thought about all the baby items new moms quickly obtain to feel more prepared for motherhood. I figured I could get by without those things and of course I did, but on the other hand, I had some things I didn’t even use either.
There are plenty of must-haves out there but also plenty of things we don’t actually need. But who’s to say really? We all have the right to feel prepared and make our lives easier when it comes to caring for our babies. There are items I didn’t use with Jackson, but this time with Isabella I decided to make necessary changes.
So here are the Top 5 baby items I didn’t know I needed. Along with some Affiliate Link!
- Diaper Genie
- Sound machine
- Bottle warmer
- Wipe warmer
- Changing table
Diaper Genie
This is almost a no brainer, since you are going to need a place to put those stinky diapers. But honestly, I didn’t bother getting one with Jackson because I didn’t think it was worth it. Well, the little pale I used for his diapers was junk, and his room smelled bad ALL THE TIME. I had to empty that thing daily and that was hardly helping the stink. I should have just gotten a diaper genie! So with Isabella, I decided to make the purchase for one, and it’s been great! It contains the stink, easy to change bags, and it’s tall so it’s at your side when you need it.
Sound Machine
The last thing I thought I needed when I had Jackson was a sound machine. I had a mobile above his crib that played lullabies and projected stars and moons. This is probably the worse thing to have over a baby’s head when he’s trying to sleep! It’s almost like you holding your phone over your head when you’re trying to sleep. I wish I knew more about baby sleepback then, but now I know that babies need a constant white noise to drown out any sounds of the house and also helps calm them enough to fall asleep. So of course from day 1 with Isabella, I made a purchase for a sound machine, and I got a portable one just in case we needed it for travelling or camping. It’s been the best baby item that has helped baby sleep for this past year. No regrets!
Bottle warmer
This is something I didn’t expect to need. I expected to breastfeed Isabella the same amount as I did with Jackson. He breastfed so well, my bottle set collected dust but I held on to them in case I had another baby one day. So when breastfeeding wasn’t working for Isabella and we had to get her on formula, I found it tedious to heat a pot of water on the stove for every bottle. So I decided to get a bottle warmer, which was safer and heated the bottle within minutes. As we all know, you’re not supposed to microwave formula or breast milk, it actually kills the good stuff the baby needs. So luckily a mom in my neighbourhood was so kind and gave me hers. It’s been a bit of a life saver when it comes to heating a bottle.
Wipe warmer
Babies need wipes, but do they really need a wipe warmer? This one is just for comfort. But I bet babies get used to the cold wipes. Although Jackson never did like those cold wipes, and I like to believe that they were the reason he hated diaper changes up until the end of diapers. This was mostly something I decided to use for newborn Isabella, and honestly she couldn’t care less now. She’s had both warm and cold wipes and she doesn’t even complain. But here we are keeping those wipes warm for her little bum and I’m fine with it until she no longer needs diaper changes.
Changing table
Here’s another no brainer of an item, where else would you change your baby? Basically anywhere, but as long as you have a changing pad that fits on a dresser top or table, you could get away without a purposefully made changing table. For Jackson, we had a whole bedroom set for him that was my brother’s, so it came with the basic pieces. His room is big enough to fit them all, but Isabella’s room is too tiny for more than 2 pieces. A desk with drawers made the perfect spot for a changing pad, and all the baby essentials for diaper changes. So for Isabella, not having a dresser or desk for her changing station, I decided to snatch up a changing table from another neighbourhood mom. It’s perfect for her room for now, with the shelves for wipes and baskets and all the baby essentials. I’ll pass it along in another year from now when potty training is close. But for now it’s an absolute essential for our diaper changes.
